So much to write about here in NYC, and so little time before the country completely collapses, depending on your world view. Of course we had the NYC Marathon this week, always a fun topic full of highs, lows, blisters, stress fractures, nail trauma and a lot of carb loading. However I’m going to leave that one alone for a bit and instead concentrate on the decline of western civilization which has been carefully disguised as the presidential election.

I’m going to ignore my Mom’s advice for the moment and talk about one of the two topics which I am never to discuss with my dear NYC podiatry patients, and wade into the muck of the current political mess of an election. It’s quite conceivable that there has never been an election such as this in anyone’s lifetime, and with the grace of Heaven (darn, there’s the other topic), there never again will be. Even those who like one of the candidates don’t really like the candidate, we just really don’t like the other guy and feel that he or she would completely ruin the country. So it’s the “anything but” election, so much more so than it’s ever been. I do seem to remember having this very conversation in the last few elections with various amateur political pundits and hearing that candidate “fill in the blank” will bring the country to its knees – favoring the rich, or stealing from the rich, building up our military to unprecedented levels, or tearing it down leaving us weak and at the mercy of everyone from the terrorists to local hot dog vendors. Sorry to say, my dear young patients, we are still here, and it’s still the greatest country on the planet. Sure we have a long way to go in taking care of all of our people, balancing security against liberty, getting along with each other and providing health care and education to everyone from coast to coast, but we are still the country the world turns to in times of need, looks to as a moral compass, and the favored destination for those seeking a new opportunity and life, liberty, and well you know the rest. And after Tuesday November 8 all that will still be true, hopefully.

So, my dear NYC podiatry patients, for this week feet will have to wait. Get out there and do what many of our brethren throughout the world cannot do – cast a vote against the guy or gal you really don’t like. I know I’m going to hold my nose and cast a vote for someone (what you thought I’d put that in a blog? I’d rather print my social security number) and accept the outcome, which hopefully the rest of the country will do as well. Yes, it stinks worse than my sneakers after a marathon, but it’s better than anywhere else.

See you in the office.
